If giving birth is natural why do I need a class?

Good question, so I’d like to share my perspective as a midwife. Giving birth may be a natural process, but it can also be a complex and physically demanding experience.

You’d never just pitch up at the start of the London Marathon without any training or preparation and expect to cross the finish line would you? And while giving birth is very different to running a marathon, the physical and mental demands are similar.

Giving birth is physically demanding

And here’s the thing. If you were running a marathon, you’d want to know the route. And you’d do some specific training for hills. You might even get the right shoes and running gear. A lot of your preparation would be in your head, reminding yourself why you’re doing it when you don’t feel like getting up in the morning to do a long training session.

What I’m trying to convey is that it’s important to be prepared, both physically and mentally, to handle the challenges of labor and birth. You don’t know how long it’s going to take, or how it’s going to feel but this is where birth preparation classes can play a crucial role. And if you’re still not convinced then think about this…

Understand what happens in labor

Expect to be delighted and surprised as you learn about the physical and emotional changes that occur during labor and birth. This knowledge can help you make informed decisions during the birthing process and feel more confident and in control.

Prepare for the unexpected

To prepare for different birthing scenarios: It’s vital to learn about different birthing options and scenarios, including pain management techniques and emergency procedures to avoid a disappointing or traumatic birth experience. This information can help you prepare for any unexpected situations that may arise during labor and birth.

Get your partner involved

To support partner involvement: If your partner is going to be present during the birth, birth preparation classes can provide them with the knowledge and skills they need to be an active and supportive participant.

Proven comfort techniques

To develop coping strategies: Labor and birth can be a physically and emotionally demanding experience. The information you’ll learn can help you develop coping strategies, such as relaxation techniques and breathing exercises, to manage pain and stress during the birthing process.

Find your tribe

To build a community: This is absolutely the best way to meet and connect with other expecting parents. The sense of community can provide a source of support and encouragement during pregnancy, labor, and beyond and community is the secret sauce of The Due Date Club
