Are you feeling excited and maybe a little nervous about the upcoming birth of your baby?
Creating a birth plan can be a helpful tool to communicate your preferences and goals for labor and birth to your healthcare providers. But let’s be real, birth is an unpredictable process, and things may not always go as planned.
The key to a successful birth plan is to have a roadmap for informed decision-making and communication between you and your care providers.
Things that work when it comes to creating a birth plan
- Be flexible: Birth plans should be open to changes as the labor progresses. For example, unexpected medical interventions or changes in the baby’s position may mean that certain aspects of the birth plan need to be adjusted.
- Collaborate with your healthcare provider: The most effective birth plans are those that are created in collaboration with your healthcare provider. They will provide guidance and expertise to help ensure that the best interests of both the mother and baby are taken into account.
- Empower yourself: Creating a birth plan can help you feel more in control and empowered during a time that can be overwhelming and uncertain. You’ll have a clear idea of what you want and can communicate it confidently to your care providers.
Remember, a birth plan is not a guarantee of a specific outcome, but it can provide a starting point for discussions with your healthcare provider and can help ensure that your preferences are taken into consideration. And while birth can be unpredictable, having a plan can help you feel more prepared and confident.
Without a birth plan, it is easy to feel as if you have no say, no control and it is difficult to be an active participant in your own birth experience.

Birth plans became popular in response to the increasing number of interventions being done and the apparent disregard for respecting your choices.
The Birth Plan template trap
From my own experience of working in busy labor rooms, unfortunately, many of the birth plans I got were no more than checklist of YES or NO answers and while I would do everything to respect the plan, very often it was difficult if the plan did not include any preparation, because a plan without preparation is just a a piece of paper that leaves both of us feeling dissatisfied.
