You will only get to spend an average of 10 hours with your doctor in your entire pregnancy. A lot of those visits involve blood tests, scans and clinical examinations to rule out risk factors. Knowing what to expect will help you to eliminate undue stress as well as be able to plan ahead so you can ask the right questions and get the right information

Your main care provider will influence your overall experience, so its vital to choose one who shares your beliefs and respects your wishes.  In this module you will learn about what role each person you will see during pregnancy plays and the factors to consider when exploring your options.

The mucus plug is the blobby sticky stuff that provides a natural barrier to infection at the mouth of the cervix. It is formed at the end of the first month of pregnancy, when the ovum is implanted in the uterine cavity. The secretion of the cervical cells takes place on a continuous basis ensuring that the plug is constantly replenished to fill the uterine cervix with no gaps between the uterine walls. The mucus contains antibodies which help the immune system to counteract pathogens.

Understanding your cervix is an important part of avoiding unnecessary medical interventions. Your cervix is literally the neck of the uterus, connecting the uterus to the vagina. It is made of fibrous, muscular tissue that feels firm to the touch, almost like touching the end of your nose.

Typically it will be 3 to 5 centimetres long and naturally angled towards your back in what we call a posterior position.
