This course takes you on a journey through your changing body, guiding you to become aware of how every organ and every system is designed to nurture and protect you and your growing baby so that you can move beyond fear and into deep trust.

What you can expect to learn about

You will only get to spend an average of 10 hours with your doctor in your entire pregnancy. A lot of those visits involve blood tests, scans and clinical examinations to rule out risk factors. Knowing what to expect will help you to eliminate undue stress as well as be able to plan ahead so you can ask the right questions and get the right information

Your main care provider will influence your overall experience, so its vital to choose one who shares your beliefs and respects your wishes.  In this module you will learn about what role each person you will see during pregnancy plays and the factors to consider when exploring your options.

What questions to ask if a procedure or recommendation is made that you don’t fully understand. How to make the most of every appointment so that you don’t leave with more questions than answers. 

Learn about delayed cord clamping and what happens when the cord is exposed to the cooler temperatures outside your  body, Wharton’s Jelly will collapse the venous structures within the cord and essentially cause a natural clamping which occurs 5 – 20 minutes after birth. 

Learn how this wonderful substance changes as your pregnancy progresses. It is initially created from your plasma and is mostly made up of water with electrolytes for the first 12 weeks. After this, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and urea are present, providing essential nutrients for your baby to grow and develop as the fluid is absorbed into your baby’s skin and tissue. 

The mucus plug is the blobby sticky stuff that provides a natural barrier to infection at the mouth of the cervix. It is formed at the end of the first month of pregnancy, when the ovum is implanted in the uterine cavity. The secretion of the cervical cells takes place on a continuous basis ensuring that the plug is constantly replenished to fill the uterine cervix with no gaps between the uterine walls. The mucus contains antibodies which help the immune system to counteract pathogens. 

Understanding your cervix is an important part of avoiding unnecessary medical interventions. Your cervix is literally the neck of the uterus, connecting the uterus to the vagina. It is made of fibrous, muscular tissue that feels firm to the touch, almost like touching the end of your nose.

Typically it will be 3 to 5 centimetres long and naturally angled towards your back in what we call a posterior position. 

Towards the end of pregnancy your cervix changes to prepare for labor and birth

Your Uterus in the only organ in your body that can completely grow to almost 10 x its size. It changes function 4 times over the course of your pregnancy and then reverts to it’s normal size and function after your baby is born. This module will amaze and surprise you while preparing you for your role in labor and birth. 

Did you know that your body creates an organ that is only necessary during pregnancy? Both your blood and your baby’s blood pass through the placenta but never mix. Learn about the function of you placenta as well as the position of your placenta during pregnancy and how this influences your birth. 

The hard bony structure create the pelvic bowl to protect your uterus and create the passage of birth. Learn how you can influence the position of your baby during pregnancy, labor and birth by understanding your pelvis and how it changes in  different positions to create more space for your body

Learn how relaxin softens the ligaments, jones and muscles to accommodate your changing body but also the many discomforts created by the effect of relaxin. Understanding the role of relaxin, progesterone and oxytocin will guide your level of confidence in the symptoms your experience and guide you to a place of deep trust in your pregnant body.
